How to Apply for Aid and Attendance

Next, if the veteran is physically unable to walk or must remain in bed for treatment as recommended by a medical professional, he or she is eligible. The third eligibility requirement involves institutionalized veterans. Particularly veterans who have been involuntarily placed in a nursing facility. The final eligibility requirement is vision loss. If the veteran is visually impaired such that their vision 5/200 or worse in both eyes, they are eligible. Upon confidently determining Aid and Attendance eligibility, applying for assistance is a matter of gathering the right forms. Consolidating this step is advised; gathering all documents in a short time and keeping them in a safe location until it is time to apply. To highlight a few of the major documents required for application, discharge papers are the first, followed by a copy of the Marriage Certificate and Death Certificate for surviving spouses, a copy of a valid Social Security Award letter, and an assessment of net worth, which is essentially all financially relevant information like bank accounts and investments. When all documents are prepared, the correct form needs to be filled out to properly apply for Aid and Attendance benefits. For applying veterans, this is VA Form 21-526. Spouses must use VA Form 21-534. It is extremely critical that all final paperwork is submitted to the correct VA processing center, corresponding to the state in which the veteran lives. Otherwise, valuable time will be lost in the process of relocating applications to the appropriate center.
